The situation is even worse with browser games. For example: Ubisoft created the game in Tom Clancy’s IP “Ghost recon: Commander”. It was available via the Facebook and had some parts of the lore. But it lasted for just 6 months in 2012. And there are no files of the game, because nothing was ever downloaded.

    • @medievalreview

Browser games could have been downloaded to an extent, the part that breaks is anything server side. Is why always online games are a bad idea for game preservation, and only if a dedicated fan is willing to reverse engineer server code and make a server will it ever be available again. See what happened with the Lego MMO for a positive example of this kind of thing happening.

It's a little different in England. The first son would inherit all the titles, property, possessions and wealth that was part of the entailed Estate(s). The second son would be expected to go into the military and would be bought a Commission. It was the third son here that would go into the church. If it was a reasonably wealthy Estate the second and third sons might each be offered an unentailed Estate.

Just found your channel. Great review of this beautiful stiletto. I too love these lethal blades. I portray Contessa Catarina Sforza in a historical theater guild. Our ensemble cast tries to keep everything within the time period of 1470 to 1500. I'm looking for an appropriate stiletto dagger ... around 13" or so. This one might be a little fancy for the Contessa. Do you any suggestions ? We're based in the U.S.

I suggest doing a search on Kult of Athena, for such a dagger. My guess is that if you are looking for costume grade, a lot of options from a manufacturer like Depeeka.

Thanks for doing these reviews, they are great for someone who knows nothing about swords! Would you be able to share that great picture reference you used of the evolution of medieval armour / swords? Also is there a similar sword (xviiib) with an interesting pommel that you would recommend over this one? Mainly due to the grip issues you mentioned?

Thomas, thanks for your thoughtful review. Regarding the tips of the quillions, they are meant to be sharp. In terms of injuring the warrior who is wielding the sword, that's a low probability event. Remember, that Irish kern and Gallowglass (and Chiefs) would have worn gauntlets or bracers. In terms of injuring the enemy, the sharper the better on both the true side a and false side. Filing teeth or deep crenelles to trap blades by the edge was also a thing. I'm a Chief of the name and actually have my family's 16th century blade. My O'Dochertaigh relatives have the sword of their last Chief, Cahir, as well. None of them have that spacer ring this sword has. My family's sword had straight not swept quillions, the ends of which are crenellated. The true edge on out sword is sharper, the false edge was less sharp, and the false edge has nick that I infer show it was used in some cases to parry or block on edge. The sheath has a flat not pointed chape, is decorated in relief, with paint and wire and metal inserts. The blade is 35", and has a 12 inch ricasso. It was considered a "short sword," for heavy pitched assaults, and with a targe, for defense. The taper is more extreme, and the tip is much sharper. My uncle had the family long sword (56"), also a ring hilted blade. I also have the scian, 22" long, plus a six inch grip. My ancestors were famed for being very tall, double or triple jointed, and renowned for their swordsmanship. The echoes of that still sound today. when I chat about old times with members of rival 'clans,' such as the O'Sullivans. Our last stronghold was mentioned in an episode of Downton Abbey, Aghamillie Castle, which thanks to Cromwell is in sheer ruins. Earlier, our stronghold was Brugh na Riogh (Bruree). My great aunt preserved the shortsword for me, and in her lifetime, the original wrap around belt had crumbles into dust. She left for me the main fastener, which was a traditional Irish toggle design of white bronze that secured the right end to the sheath, and the toggle that fastened the loops together, which was highly enamelled with late medieval Celtic designs. Also keep in mind that every feature, and yes, some are subtle, of these swords was functional, either for combat function, easy cleaning and maintenance, or durability.
